2024 New Zealand Stakes Form Guide & Tips
(1) Sharp ‘N’ Smart (Best Each Way – $11.00)
Sharp ‘N’ Smart is struggling to recapture his best form, but the Australian Group 1 winner is still worth including.
He hasn’t come back as an older horse, but class is permanent, and the odds are too good to pass up.
(2) Puntura ($23.00)
Looked good scoring three consecutive wins earlier this prep. They might be too quick for him on a good surface.
(3) Ladies Man (Best Roughie – $14.00)
A Group 1 Spring Classic winner who needed two runs back from a spell.
Narrowly missed out on a Melbourne Cup spot last year, and racing over 2000m should be right up his alley.
(4) One Bold Cat ($11.00)
Yet to race at Ellerslie, which is the primary concern. Best form comes on heavy tracks, so conditions won’t suit.
(5) El Vencedor ($26.00)
Never too far away from the mark, but we don’t think he has enough speed to keep up with the likes of Legarto.
He would need to find a few lengths on recent racing.
(6) Skyman ($35.00)
Showed form in Australia with Chris Waller, but his recent efforts have been poor.
We don’t expect the stayer to be anywhere close to them on Saturday.
(7) Mali Ston ($19.00)
He hasn’t been too far away recently, and he keeps running better than expected.
However, he won’t find this any easier, and a first four spot is his best chance.
(8) Riodini ($41.00)
Much like Skyman, he showed good form in Sydney, but he has gone off the boil.
Just not the same horse recently, and it’s tough to include him in selections.
(9) Legarto (Best Bet – $1.50)
The best horse in the race, hence the short odds. The Australian Guineas winner is all class with nine wins from 13 starts.
She should be storming home with Ryan Elliott in the saddle, and although the odds are short, she will be running through many multi bets.
(10) Aquacade ($11.00)
Seven wins from 18 starts, and she could bridge the gap after finishing 2.2 lengths behind Legarto last start.
Her best form takes her close, and if she can settle on the speed, she could give the favourite something to catch.
(11) Manifique ($23.00)
Her form has tapered off alarmingly, which is a big concern. We can’t have her in our selections.
